Gridkhana Round 2 2023 (The Castrol event)

Kester Johnson

Although I only managed to secure second place in the recent civic event, my main goal was to enjoy the drive and perhaps even win a small victory. Originally, I had planned to add a 50-shot of Nos with some methanol to boost the car's performance, but due to time and financial constraints, we couldn't make it happen. Consequently, I resigned myself to driving the car at the lowest horsepower and expected to finish last. However, luck was on my side when the rain started to pour - a glimmer of hope emerged.

The GP2 event showcased some truly exceptional drivers, and they inspired me to step up my game. I realized that I needed to make some improvements and shed some weight - not just in the car, but also personally. It's time to get back on track and trim the excess fat… not the car me.. lol

I want to express my gratitude to the following individuals and companies who contributed to my racing experience: Maxxecu / Maxxtuning AB for providing the ECU, The RaceTrac Co. for supplying the reliable 180TW tires that performed exceptionally well in both wet and dry conditions, Kazim Tullah, Dylon Clarke, and Neilson IWash for their hard work on the car, GarageFresh Trinidad for the oil change, Central Auto Spares and Accessories for providing the necessary parts, Ronney Seepersad for the coilovers, Bobreal Media for capturing stunning photographs, Runul Roberts for his work on the start lights, Devi Nath and the Castrol Team for organizing the event and giving us the opportunity to enjoy the thrill of driving, and TTASA - Trinidad & Tobago Automobile Sports Association for generously allowing these talented individuals to utilize their premises.

Last but not least, I want to acknowledge my local MaxxECU TEAM at Ultimate Sport Tuning Ltd for their ongoing support and expertise.

Although I may not have emerged as the victor in this event, I wholeheartedly enjoyed the exhilarating experience of driving. Thank you all for being a part of it.

BIG shoutout to my drivers of the day:

Ronnie in his b18 Civic MaxxECU Race,

Dylon in my civic b20b non-vtec MaxxECU Street, Dylon toyota celica st205 MaxxECU Sport,

Sanjeev Seejoor in his Drift Shenanigans Skyline RB20 MaxxECU Street

and Sajid Ali in his s2000 with a Haltch E1500. Hoping to have you guys at the next event.

Tobago Hillclimb 2022

Kester Johnson

Last weekend we were in Tobago attaining TTRCs “Tobago Hillclimb 2022” and it was awesome. This event started with us supporting Devon’s Supra in the drift part of the event but ended up also giving support to Nikhil Nanan B13 SR16 MaxxECU on pump gas which also lead to me giving a hand to Vyshall Nandlel’s Yacco Nissan GTiR also controlled by a MaxxECU tuned by Konk. And in the last minute, Tobago own Reinaldo Solomon showed up after fixing his gearbox that same, day in his S15 MaxxECU.

TTASA Drift Practice Wet...

Kester Johnson

This past weekend was our first full day at a TTASA’s Drift event and my word I was empressed. There times that I did not even see my photographer :) At this event, We had two cars out both running MaxxECU Street ECUs that happened to have two great pilots, Roger Hutcheon and Devon Bartholomew.

First I have to say to the team of Roger Hutcheon, very very very will done… Let us be honest, if Kasey Ramoutar can help out and not because he was the only one that was small enough to fix this the engine bay to reach a nut… you having some performance. Now really, all these guys got together to make sure the car was back of after the turbo went in the first run, the day belongs to you guys… Thank you.

Some words from Devon. Now you have to understand that devon was the first person to buy a MaxxECU in Trinidad and Tobago, so there may be some bias… facts: it was on 18 and the ramp rate on the turbo was increased… :) just saying…

With a new coilover setup the car seemed a lot stiffer and a lot grippier. In fact, the car felt as though the power dropped because it didn’t spin the tyres as easily.
Some 255-35-18’s at 340 TW, I called Kester and asked to double check the map ahead of the drift practice. He said yup 17 psi in 3rd and sent me on my way. I drove onto the track and realized immediately the antilag was set more aggressive. I warmed the tyres and prepared for a grippy drift session, i.e. overworking the clutch to get what I want.
1 testing lap led to 5 continuous laps, which concluded only due to the delaminated death of a tyre. I have never been in such glee. I flicked the car harder and harder each time, not having to watch a gauge. I barely heard the antilag but I knew it was there as I didn’t have to clutch kick to wake the car.
When rain drenched the track, it was more of the same....but with the AC on 😈😈. I have never been happier with performance. I probably did over 30 laps at WOT, sending the fuel tank from full to vapor, needing a top up from a keg just to reach home.
All in all, the claims of others “but Kester could’ve made more power” falls on deaf ears here. I’m ecstatic.

Super Street Competition Event #1

Kester Johnson

This weekend was Super Street Competition Event #1 in which one of our drivers Shiva Maharaj took part in. This was his first event and walked away with 3rd place in the Time Attack half of the event in his Honda Powered B18C Hondata (s300v4) controlled hatch.

We would just like to take the time to say, very well done Shiva Maharaj, you have done us proud.

Some quick words from the man himself...

I entered the 1st Superstreet event for 2016 last weekend and it was amazing. The Driving school on Saturday was very informative, thanks to my coach Kristian Boodoosingh for showing me the lines and much much more. The more I drove the more I learnt the car and gained in confidence especially at top and bottom corners.

On race day I got a practice run and it felt good. I was disappointed with my first TA run that day, nerves I guess so I had 1 more chance later to make up for it. I went all out did much better
and posted my best time 50.5s. This was eventually good enough to place me 3rd in the SuperStreet class

SS2. I felt satisfied with that but when the chance to run in the special Honda race came well that was the highlight of the day. The competition made me go faster and I loved it. Didn’t place last and went faster.

All in all I believe I set a foundation that day to take me further in the championship for SS2 group.

Special thanks to my wife Shereen and 2 kids, coach and mentor Kristian, mechanic Kazim of RYTA

Auto Care and Tuner Kester of Ultimate Sport Tuning. Not forgetting the brilliant job by Devi Nath and the team of the Superstreet crew, race officials, race wardens. It was a verywell managed event.

And to the SuperStreet Team of which i was also a part of... Great Work guys
